Product Review: Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas
Food for Life has a winner on it’s hands here. The package advertises a product that is “unique” and “specifically developed to be moist, delicious and easy to use”. That sounds great to me :)
Ease of Use
This is the first gluten free tortilla I have ever used that I could pull out of the fridge, make a wrap, and have the whole thing hold together. The tortillas do not break in half or split at the edges (unless overstuffed). They hold together as well as flour tortillas do. I actually was able to eat my wrap with one hand, no fork needed.
Appearance
Admittedly, these tortillas look a little strange. They are a light, golden-brown color and absolutely covered in bubbles. The tortillas are very shiny, almost plastic looking.
Taste and Texture
These tortillas taste like tortillas. On first taste, I thought it tasted exactly like what I remember flour tortillas tasting like. Since it has been almost four years since I’ve had a flour tortilla, I asked my husband (who eats flour tortillas regularly) to try one and make a comparison for me. He said that though the brown rice tortillas were a lot firmer, the taste was very close to a gluten filled tortilla. He said it’s the closest he’s tasted yet.
The texture was firm, but still soft. They had a chewy texture that I really like.
Versatility
The versatility of a tortilla is endless. Since these can be rolled without breaking, I really think there are no limits on the culinary creativeness you can achieve.
Overall Value
I paid $3.79 for a package of six tortillas. The price is higher than I would like, but I will pay it again.
Rating
I am excited to be able to eat a wrap with one hand again! I love these.
